About this calculator
TNB (Tenaga Nasional Berhad) charges domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia using a 5-block progressive tariff (Tarif A). The first 200 kWh are cheap (21.80 sen/kWh) — about RM44/month for a small flat — but once you cross 600 kWh the rates jump and the 8% Service Tax (SST) starts applying on top. That's why a household running 2–3 air-conditioners can see bills jump from RM200 to RM500+ in hot months: most of the extra usage falls into the expensive blocks AND is taxed. The other small line items (KWTBB renewable-energy levy, ICPT surcharge/rebate) are excluded from this calculator because they change every 6 months by ministerial gazette — the tariff blocks themselves have been stable since 2014, so this estimate is accurate to within ~5% for typical bills. To cut costs: an inverter-type air conditioner running 8 hours costs RM3–4 less per day than a non-inverter one; switching all bulbs to LED can save 100–200 kWh/month in larger homes; and keeping fridge thermostat at the warmest acceptable setting (4–5 °C) reduces compressor cycling.
Formula
Total = (Σ kWh in block × block rate) + 8% SST on the portion of charges from kWh above 600
Example calculation
Example: 500 kWh per month
Block 1 (200 kWh × 21.80 sen) = RM43.60. Block 2 (100 kWh × 33.40 sen) = RM33.40. Block 3 (200 kWh × 51.60 sen) = RM103.20. Total = RM180.20. No SST because usage is under 600 kWh.
