  • · Stacked discounts (e.g. 30% + 10%) multiply the kept fractions, not add the percentages: 0.70 × 0.90 = 0.63, i.e. 37% off, not 40%.

About this calculator

Discount math sounds simple but trips a lot of people up, especially with stacked offers. A '30% + 10% off' deal is NOT 40% off — applying 10% after 30% gives 100% × 0.70 × 0.90 = 63%, which is 37% off, not 40%. This calculator handles the two everyday cases cleanly: (1) you see a marked-down item and want the final price, or (2) you see two prices on a tag and want to know the actual percent off. To compare two single-discount offers against the same item, the rule is simple: bigger percentage off = bigger saving. For stacked discounts, multiply the 'kept' fractions: 30% off then 20% off keeps 0.70 × 0.80 = 0.56 of the original, i.e. 44% off in total. Many Malaysian retailers also display 'Was RM X, Now RM Y' — paste those into the second mode below to verify the percentage they claim.

Formula

Sale = Original × (1 − Discount%)
Discount% = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100

Example calculation

Example: RM200 item at 25% off

25% of RM200 is RM50 off, so the sale price is RM150. You pay 75% of the original.

Frequently asked questions
